night prayer

This lonely road I am walking on
Where did it begin? Where will it end?

I never feared darkness coming near
Now I don’t know why I behold the sky
To find the brightest star

Mother Moonlight, fill my scared eyes
Light up my way with your brightest ray
Shining on everything through the clouds
Take my hands ‘till the morning will come.

This lonely road  You are not alone
I am walking on   When you leave your home
...
And when the dark night comes   I will always care
Who will save my soul?   And I will be there

Today I understand the Nightingale

"Nightingale" is one song composed by Yanni, who is my favorite musician. You may have heard of the rhythm of this song before, for it's often used as background music in television programes. But not until today when I finished reading "The Nightingale and the Rose", a fairy tale written by Oscar Wilde, did I realize the true feeling and meaning of this song.

Wilde's stories diffuse a kind of beauty that is sorrowful, criticize the reality and provide many profound questions for thought. His fairy tales are not only for the children, but for the adults as well.
"The Nightingale and the Rose" depicts a story that a romantic nightingale comes to the aid of a lovesick student who has a single day to find a red rose. But the red rose can be acquired only by stained with heart's blood. The nightingale sets her breast against the thorn and devotes her own life to the red rose, which stands for the true love.
And the climax of this story comes, which made me deeply moved.
Closer and closer against the thorn, and louder and louder grows her song. Petal following petal, as song followes song. As the thorn touches her heart, a fierce pang of pain shoots through her. Bitter and bitter, in the end when the rose's heart gets crimson as a ruby, the nightingale is dead with the thorn in her heart.
The next day the boy finds that red rose, which is made from a creature's life and love. But when he happily takes this beautiful rose to the girl he loves,  the girl doesn't accept it. She likes the jewels sent by a rich boy more. Then the disappointed boy throws the roses into the street, where it falls into the gutter and a cart-wheel goes over it...

This's a really heart-touching tragedy full of meaning and moral.
What is the true love? Just like the nightingale, she loves the boy's eyes and lips. She
thinks the love is more precious than jewels, for it can't be purchased and weighed out. "Love is wiser than Philosophy, though she is wise, and mightier than Power, though he is mighty." For this love, she dedicates a lot,  suffers a lot.  In the book of "Stray Birds" Tagore said , "It is the tears of the earth that keep her smiles in bloom." Similarly, it is the pains of hers that fulfill the true love. This is the love, which is always sung by many people for thousands of years. It needs sacrifice, and it will be perfected by death as this tale tells us.
But in reality, most of people don't believe it. The love in their eyes is just a decoration
of life, usually judged by whether it's useful, helpful or not. "We are not suitable to each other" is often used as an excuse of parting. However, the actual reason is that there is no love between them. At present you are suitable, but maybe in future you two will become unsuitable, for example because of the decrease of wealth or decrepit looks. Then you're going to find another one who is so-called suitable. Conflicts of many families and marriages arise therefore. I don't think that girl in this fairy tale will be happy in future, because she is greedy and selfish. She doesn't deserve the happiness. Moreover the
boy won't own happiness, either. He thinks the love is useless and unpractical. His love is superficial, and he will never get a girl with whom he can live happily. Nevertheless few people in this world can be different from them.

Love is something which stays a life long.It can not be substituted. It only belongs to one special person. Only in this way, only in this faith, we can be hand in hand till death do us apart. No matter what the situation is good or bad, rich or poor, healthy or ill, success or failure, we will support each other, love each other, share joys and sorrows, and build a happy family life in joint effort. This is the headstream of happiness. This is the true meaning of love.
But that poor nightingale isn't able to possess this bliss even though she has this kind of belief. But just because of this, by her deeds, she has sung a peak song that still keeps lingering in our hearts, forever.

The symbol of the hope:Little orange Lamp

The article of "Little orange Lamp"(《小橘灯》)was one text of the Chinese Textbook when I was in the middle school. It was written by the famous author: BingXin. Today when I saw some sentences of this text in somebody's bbs signature file again, many feeling occured to my mind immediately.
Original words:

This girl's father was a member of CCP, he left home for escaping from the security agents' arresting. Her mother was beaten to hematemesis(吐血) for involvement. At the Chinese New Year's Eve, her mother lay on the bed, and the red potato porridge was the only supper. Though these miseries and pains, the young girl kept a spirit of composedness镇定), braveness and optimism. She made a mini lamp with  peel of a orange that the author brought, put a short candle in it. This lamp illumined the path where this author came back home, and meanwhile lighten the people's heart and soul.
Just as the distinguished musician of Yanni said at the begining of the play of his song "Until the last moment":Don't forget how to enjoy the life. Because sometimes we got caught in our troubles and our problems and we let life sorrowful. So sleep away and life is precious, all of lives. And one I must try to take it as much of it as possible.

That's the positive attitude to the life. This mind status can accompany us to get through the period of darkness, no matter how many works you should to finish, no matter how much pressure you have to burden, let alone frustration, difficulties, unsatisfied affairs. Even in the adversity, with hope, the light is always around you, you'll find the way out in the end. Just because life is precious, it behoove us to take as much of it as possible, not suffer it.
Tolerance,  elegance are just profile of this spirit. The true meaning of this is the headstream of generous bearing and spiritual peace.
I admire that girl. Her action affects generations of people.
As the end of that article, what I wish and want to say is:
We all will be fine!

FSPAC conference

The 19th international conference on Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics(FSPAC) is held in Nankai University. It's the first time the conference is held in Asia.My roommate is major in this area, so through him I was lucky to join the open ceremony today.
Among lots of foreign mathematicians I found an old man whose hair and beard are different from others, and when he walked his posture was a little odd.Durling the rest of the conference, I saw him more closely and got to know his leg wasn't well, that's why his walking posture was unnatural. This professor is from the University of Southampton. For his inconveniece of legs, his one hand held a stick.I helped him pick food at coffee break time.
Here's the photo I took with him,he was cool, wasn't he?

And there were two kind madams, the left sat at the chairman seat when ceremony was going. In this academic field  dominated by man,she was heroine!

The last one.He is the toppest mathematician of this field--Richard P. Stanley ,from MIT.When lecture was being addressed,he sat by my side, and I saw he drew some figures that I didn't understand. He seemed to be inarticulate, didn't like talking very much.I recall  John Nash in the Movie "Beautiful Mind" who is also a great mathematician.Maybe this kind of person can achieve the greatest attainment. Most of their time is spent thinking!

The chance of international communication is limited in Nankai University. But once you experience it, you'll learn a lot .The courtesy、good manners and the attraction from these excellent people.
